Five dead in Germany from New Year’s fireworks accidents

Police officers patrol the streets of Berlin as people set off fireworks to celebrate New Year. Across Germany, five people died in accidents linked to fireworks and in the capital, a police officer was severely injured.

Some 330 people were detained in Berlin overnight, but police added that contrary to previous years, "there were no major violence or incidents". 

Some 13 law enforcement officers were injured as a result of the accidents this year, including one seriously, police spokesman, Florian Nath, said.
