Fisheries Sector Development: Golden Jubilee Celebration of Fisheries Department

Department of Fisheries celebrated its Golden Jubilee 50th anniversary celebration in Nay Pyi Taw on Tuesday.

Union Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation U Tin Htut Oo stressed to prioritize for human resource development and capacity building training for sustainable development of fisheries sector. He also pointed out the needs to conserve the transboundary fish species, and implementation of Blue Economy for the Blue Ocean which is the common agreement of ASEAN.

The Union Minister called for cooperative efforts and local and international organizations and private sector for achieving technology, investment and market penetration. The outstanding staff in agro-economy, fisheries and sports fields were also presented honorary awards.

The Department of Fisheries was established on 15th March 1972, and is providing assistance for boosting production of marine products for local consumption and exports. In 2019-2020, the fisheries sector earned over 853 million US dollars while it contributes over 786 million US dollars in 2020-2021 fiscal year.
