Fire at nursing home in Chile kills 16

A late-night fire at the El Edén nursing home in southern Chile killed 16 elderly residents on Friday. Out of 26 residents inside at the time, 16 people died and 10 survived and the survivors were taken to a local hospital for care.

Local health and municipal officials stated that the facility was unregulated and had faced fines and administrative proceedings for rule violations since 2019. President José Antonio Kast ordered an urgent national review of living conditions and oversight in nursing homes across the country.
