At least 10 people were killed and dozens injured after a man drove a truck into a crowd in the main tourist district of New Orleans, Louisiana, early Wednesday.

The incident occurred in the popular French Quarter shortly after local time 3 a.m. The area was crowded with people celebrating New Year's. Some 300 police officers were deployed for the night.

The FBI said the driver and police later exchanged fire, and that he died on the spot.

It identified him as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, from Texas and said that what appear to be improvised explosive devices were found in the suspect's vehicle and the French Quarter.

As a flag of the Islamic State group was found in the vehicle, the FBI said it is working to determine the suspect's potential associations and affiliations with terrorist organizations. It also said it is investigating the attack as an act of terrorism.
