
Veterans from the Falklands War who volunteered to fight against Argentine forces gathered in Port Stanley on Friday night, to mark 40 years anniversary.The Argentine military landed on the tiny islands on April 2, 1982, with the idea of recovering the territory that the British say they have occupied since 1833. It sparked a 74-day conflict that left hundreds of dead.Following several weeks of intense fighting, Argentine forces surrendered on June 14, 1982, a date that has since been known in the Falkland Islands as Liberation Day, and is a national holiday.
Also,in Buenos Aires, veterans and their families held a candle lit vigil to honour fallen soldiers of the Falklands War.A total of 649 Argentine military personnel died as well as 255 British military personnel, and three Falkland Islanders.After decades of tense trans-Atlantic relations, ties between the two countries have improved.Britain and Argentina also signed an agreement to exhume and identify the remains of dozens of Argentine soldiers.
