Expansion of Coffee Cultivation: 300,000 acres of coffee cultivation to expand in 5 years

To expand the cultivation of 300,000 acres of coffee across the country, 5 years plan is being carried out by the Coffee and Seasonal Crops Division under the Department of Agriculture.

It aims to increase the income of coffee growers, to improve the coffee quality, ability to produce value-added products, to develop the Myanmar’s coffee sector and to mainly export coffee to the foreign market. 

Myint Swe, Director, Coffee and Seasonal Crops Division, said "From 2023-2024 to 2027-2028 fiscal years, there has been drawn up the plan to extend 300,000 of coffee acres. As a plan, we aims to expand the cultivation 200,000 of Arabica coffee acres and 100,000 acres of Robusta coffee. In cooperation with the Department of Agriculture, and Department of Agriculture Land Management and Statistics fieldwork is already underway to find and locate the designated acres land. Based on the discovered acres and coffee species, we will distribute the coffee seeds started from November this year to March, 2023. Depending on the acres of land, growers can submit to us from the relevant regions for the coffee seeds requirement." 

In Myanmar, the cultivations of coffee are mostly in Mandalay region, Shan Sates (South, North, and East) and Kayin Sate.  Also there are about 50,000 acres of coffee plantation with annual output of about 10,000 tons of coffee across the country.
