The EU vowed to take action to strengthen the security of underwater cables in the Baltic Sea following recent suspected sabotage of key infrastructure. Several undersea telecom and power cables were damaged in recent months, raising concerns over national security. Observers linked the attacks to a broader strategy targeting Western nations.

Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President, European Commission said "We have witnessed that almost everything can be used as a weapon against us. Critical infrastructure and cybersecurity, they have been under attacks aiming to create distrust and confusion. We have observed election interference, disinformation campaigns and also weaponisation of migrants."

In response, the EU announced steps to protect critical undersea infrastructure and proposed an action plan to strengthen the security of submarine cables, addressing risks to vital services and security.
