Ethnic Affairs: Preservation of traditional ethnic dress

Union Minister for Ethnic Affairs U Than Maung has called for greater efforts to preserve the original styles of traditional ethnic clothing amid growing modernization.

Speaking at a meeting with a Rakhine traditional costume group in Yangon on Friday, the Union Minister said advances in society, the economy and technology have led to new designs in traditional attire, and stressed that excessive changes could gradually erode the original characteristics of ethnic dress.

He encouraged ethnic communities to establish groups dedicated to preserving authentic traditional costumes and safeguarding their cultural heritage. The meeting discussed plans to protect and promote traditional ethnic attire. The Union Minister pledged support for their efforts.
