





National Indoor Stadium (1) Thuwunna in Yangon has been successfully upgraded with Chinese aid. This Stadium hand-over event was held on Tuesday with a ceremony.
During the ceremony, Chinese ambassador to Myanmar H.E Mr. Chen Hai delivered a speech and also Union Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs U Min Thein Zan gave a congratulation speech and remarks.
Director, Sports and Physical Education Department, Khun Jar Aung said “The upgrading is two-year project. During the project, we halted all the competitions including international ones. We are not sure yet if intentional competitions will be held here because of pandemic, but we are implementing and drawing the plans to hold local competitions. After the upgrade, the Stadium has now fire doors as well.”
In November 2017, the Chinese Government and the Government of Myanmar signed letter of exchange for this National Indoor Stadium (1) Thuwunna upgrading project. The Project commenced on July 31, 2019 and was completed on November 11, 2021. The upgrading of the Stadium costs 220 million yuan.
Chief Engineer, Shanghai Construction Group (SCG), Mr. ZHW GUANG said “This Stadium was built in 1980 with the Chinese aid. Most parts of the Stadium were ravaged after many years later, so we started to refurbish this building in 2019. The Thuwunna stadium is the symbol of the Myanmar’s Stadium that’s why we refurbished not to vanish the original design. During the construction period, we faced many challenges due to pandemic and other reasons but we did it in time – I’m so glad.”
The Thuwunna National Indoor Sports Stadium was originally constructed in the 1980s with financial support from the Chinese Government.
