
Ecuador's newly inaugurated President Guillermo Lasso met with the U.S. diplomatic corps on Tuesday morning in his first meeting with representatives of his counterpart Joe Biden. The representation of U.S. President Joe Biden was led by his ambassador to the United Nations (U.N.), Linda Thomas-Greenfield. She was accompanied by the U.S. Ambassador to Ecuador, Michael J. Fitzpatrick, among other States authorities. The bilateral meeting lasted approximately one hour.
Afterwards, the Head of State received the Venezuelan opposition leader Leopoldo López Mendoza, his wife and his father. According to López, the president spoke of his commitment to regularise the migration status of almost half a million Venezuelans. The rise to power of right-wing President Guillermo Lasso, bringing to an end an era of left-wing rule marked by the figure of defeated former socialist leader Rafael Correa, which was characterized, in part, by strained relations with Washington.
