Southern Iraq is facing severe drought, which has led to significant damage to farmland and forced farmers and shepherds to sell their livestock. Water levels in the Tigris and Euphrates rivers have declined due to the almost complete absence of rain in the last four years.

In addition, water flowing from the neighboring countries of Iran and Turkiye has also decreased. Many of the wetlands fed by the Euphrates have been affected by the drought, resulting in harsh living conditions for farmers who depend on farming and fishing. Iraq is among the world's five countries most vulnerable to the effects of climate change.
