Domestic elephants drop significantly

The number of domestic elephants in Dak Lak province in Việt Nam has plummeted by more than 90%, from about 502 in the early 1980s to 36 in 2023. Of these, the Lắk district has 14 elephants, and the BuônĐôn district has 22. Notably, no baby elephants have been born in captivity for many years.

The People's Committee of Dak Lak province has approved the elephant-friendly tourism project. It aims to end elephant riding in tourism by 2026.
