Union Minister for Foreign Affairs U Than Swe briefed foreign ambassadors and UN representatives in Yangon on Myanmar’s current situation and developments on Wednesday.

He explained preparations for the upcoming multi-party democratic general election to be held on December 28, 2025, emphasizing that it will be free, fair, and inclusive. Political parties and candidates can register without restriction under election laws, and international observers and media have been invited to ensure transparency.

The Union Minister also discussed the peace process, noting that the government continues to invite ethnic armed organizations to join peace talks and participate in national political dialogue. He highlighted efforts to combat border-related crimes, including online scams, casinos, and human trafficking along border areas such as Myawaddy’s KK Park. Since October 2023, Myanmar has returned nearly 68,000 foreign nationals from 52 countries who entered illegally through neighboring countries.

He urged neighboring nations to cooperate fully in tackling cross-border criminal networks that use their infrastructure for illegal online and financial operations. Officials from the Union Election Commission demonstrated the Myanmar Electronic Voting Machines (MEVMs), allowing diplomats to test them and ask questions.

Meanwhile, officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs briefed on drug control efforts, stressing the need for regional cooperation to stop chemical drugs and cross-border trafficking. The meeting also included video evidence of recent anti-cybercrime operations and the demolition of illegal buildings in KK Park. The event concluded with a Q&A session between the diplomats and officials.
