Children have harvested dinosaur-shaped gourds in a central Japanese city in Fukui Prefecture. The long-necked gourds look like plesiosaurs. A group of residents in the city's Shikatanicho district aim to make the fruit a local specialty. It is growing them with a local elementary school. They planted seeds in May.
The group said the fruit are smaller than usual due partly to severe heat this summer. But about 60 gourds were harvested, the largest weighing around 2 kilograms. The gourds will be dried after their insides are emptied out. Children will paint them around November and make them into dinosaur figurines and other items.
