The Ministry of Health organized a ceremony in Nay Pyi Taw to mark World Sight Day on Friday. Union Minister for Health Dr. Thet Khaing Win led the event, and made a speech, highlighting that about 1 billion people globally suffer from visual impairments, with 90% of them in developing countries.
He emphasized that 80% of these impairments could be prevented or treated. In Myanmar, common causes of vision loss include cataracts, refractive errors, injuries, water-related diseases, and conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure.
The country successfully eliminated trachoma as a public health issue in 2020, as declared by the World Health Organization. The Union Minister also pointed out the efforts to improve eye health, including outreach cataract surgeries and eye check-ups for children in schools.
He encouraged all to prioritize regular eye health check-ups and highlighted ongoing initiatives to make eye care services more accessible to all. The theme for this year’s World Sight Day was “Love Your Eyes,” promoting the sharing of knowledge and encouraging people to value and care for their vision.
