On Wednesday, China launched the newest and largest offshore converter station, marking the entry of the ultra-high voltage direct current transmission era for the country. The facility acts as an "energy heart" in the sea, collecting massive amounts of electricity generated by offshore wind turbines, converting the power into direct current, and sending it ashore via submerged cables.
Instead of energy-heavy air conditioning, it uses seawater to passively cool the servers. This also drops the Power Usage Effectiveness rating to an incredibly efficient 1.15, saving massive amounts of land and electricity.
