Chinese Ministry of Commerce on Thursday announced it will adjust export controls on helium in a timely manner based on domestic and international supply-demand changes. This follows an immediate, temporary export ban enacted to safeguard domestic reserves for critical sectors like semiconductor chip manufacturing and medical equipment.

While China produces only a small fraction of its own helium and imports over 80% of its needs, the country had seen a recent spike in exports in early 2026. The temporary ban was enacted to ensure local chipmakers and AI industries maintain adequate cooling and manufacturing gases amid global deficits.
