In his first speech as President of Chile, Gabriel Boric on Friday vowed to be president of all Chileans, and to stop human rights violations.

Speaking from the presidential palace La Moneda in capital Santiago, Boric said he planned to work toward the recovery of Chile, which has recently gone through "earthquakes, catastrophes, crises, convulsions and a global pandemic, and human rights violations that will not take place again in our country.

"At 36, Boric is the youngest president in the history of the South American nation. Boric takes office amid one of the most complex situations the South American country has faced since the return to democracy in 1990.

Security challenges in the north and south and galloping inflation that rising oil prices will exacerbate following Russia's military operation - Chile imports almost all of its fossil fuels - will be significant challenges for his term in office.
