At an event in the city of Ise in central Japan’s Mie Prefecture, families snapped photos of their children dressed as traditional “hina” dolls.
The annual event is held at a commercial facility near the Ise Jingu Shrine to coincide with Girls’ Day on March 3. In many households, hina dolls are displayed ahead of the festival to pray for the health and happiness of young girls. Parents aimed their smartphone cameras at their children, who posed on a platform designed to resemble the tiered stands used for doll displays. The venue also featured displays of antique hina dolls, including ones made with clam shells.
