





In celebration of the International Tea Day 2026, the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Yangon hosted a reception of Ceylon Tea Evening on May 21st.
Jointly celebrated with the Sri Lanka Tea Board, the occasion showcased the rich tea heritage and distinctive flavours of Ceylon Tea. During the event, altogether 7 different kinds of tea varieties were showcased.
Ambassador, Prabashini Ponnamperuma, Sri Lanka Embassy, Yangon said "Ceylon Tea is historically famous mainly because it's unique and distinct in flavor and aroma. Because in Sri Lanka, mainly that is climatic conditions is prevailing in Sri Lanka. We have 7 regional categories of tea, the flavor and aroma differ according to the elevation, this means different geographical heights."
The event also offered a unique opportunity to experience Sri Lanka’s renowned tea culture while fostering fellowship and dialogue.
President, Ye Htut, Myanmar Tea Producer & Exporters Association said "At the invitation of the Embassy of Sri Lanka, I joined this tea evening to expand tea culture boundaries between Myanmar and Sri Lanka. In the future, we are planning to cooperate in tea sector sharing production and agriculture technique between Myanmar and Sri Lanka. We also found out that green tea cultivation and production are widely expanded in Myanmar. Efforts are underway for more production of green tea for better practices of drinking green tea."
Ambassador, Prabashini Ponnamperuma, Sri Lanka Embassy, Yangon said "Importance of this Day is the focus should be on the development of livelihood of tea growers in different countries and to concentrate on the sustainable development, sustainable agricultural practices and how tea agriculture is being utilized for the poverty reduction for the livelihood development of rural folks and how this tea cultivation is managed sustainably."
Ceylon tea is a premium, historic term for tea produced in Sri Lanka. Renowned for its brisk, full-bodied flavor and signature reddish brew, it comes in black, green, and white varieties.
