Brazil's Rio kicks off Carnival parades

Rio de Janeiro's Carnival samba parades began on Sunday, coinciding with anticipation over Brazil's potential first Oscar win.

The film “I'm Still Here”, directed by Walter Salles, received nominations for Best Picture, Best Foreign Film, and Best Lead Actress for Fernanda Torres, who won a Golden Globe for her performance. As samba schools performed, billboards and posters supporting Torres were displayed throughout Rio, with some parades dedicated to her, adding to the excitement of the Carnival celebrations.
