The U.S. and Mexican presidents met along with top cabinet members on Monday ahead of the North American Leaders' Summit in Mexico City.

U.S. President Joe Biden said migration and trade would be among the issues at the top of the agenda as the two countries seek to "deepen" their ties. Biden also said the neighbours needed to tackle the "plague" of fentanyl being moved across their shared border.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is due to join the talks with Biden and Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, with the main meetings scheduled for Tuesday. Ahead of the summit, Biden announced a major shift in migration policy, which had been negotiated with Mexico. Under the plan, Washington will send 30,000 migrants per month from Cuba, Nicaragua, Haiti and Venezuela back across the Mexican border from among those who entered the U.S. illegally.
