At least 17 people have been killed and more than 100 others wounded after two trains collided in northeastern Bangladesh, said by police and officials on Monday. The crash in the eastern city of Bhairab saw a freight train smash into a passenger train travelling in the opposite direction, derailing two passenger carriages.

The rescue operation was halted on Tuesday morning after rescuers and residents together extracted passengers from the wreckage. Authorities were investigating the exact cause of the crash, but a senior Bangladesh Railway official indicated a red light may have been disregarded.
