Bangkok tuk-tuk regulations proposed to reduce pollution

Tuk-tuks have been part of Thailand for at least 66 years and have become one of the country’s most recognisable symbols.  However, the Department of Land Transport is considering new measures to regulate tuk-tuk services in inner Bangkok. 

The department is seeking public feedback on a proposal to restrict petrol-powered three-wheeled taxis from operating in central Bangkok, while allowing electric tuk-tuks to continue providing services.  The proposal is aimed at reducing air and noise pollution in the inner-city area. 

Some members of the public have expressed concern that, although the move could reduce noise and exhaust fumes, it may also diminish the traditional character of the tuk-tuk.  They have suggested that problems should instead be addressed on a vehicle-by-vehicle basis, warning that broad restrictions could cause inconvenience for tourists and other passengers.
