European Council president Charles Michel on Wednesday met Armenian Prime Minister NikolPashinyan and Azerbaijan's President IlhamAliyev to lay the groundwork for peace talks to end the decades-long conflict over the separatist region of Nagorno-Karabakh.Armenia and Azerbaijan have been locked in a decades-old dispute over the separatist area, which lies within Azerbaijan and had been under the control of ethnic Armenian forces backed by Armenia since a separatist war there ended in 1994.But a six-week war in 2020 that left more than 6,600 people dead ended with Azerbaijan reclaiming control over large parts of Nagorno-Karabakh and surrounding areas that the Armenia-backed separatists controlled.
