Auspicious New Year: Buddhists perform meritorious deeds during Thingyan

Pilgrims and visitors from regions and states pay homage to Shwedagon Pagoda during Thingyan. On the new year occasion, there are more pilgrims at the pagoda than before, member of the Pagoda Board of Trustees said.

Htay Hlaing, Member of Shwedagon Pagoda Board of Trustees said "People come to the pagoda early morning to offer alms food. More pilgrims visit the pagoda because now is the New Year occasion of Myanmar Buddhists. There are also charity food donation, mediation camps and parittas recitation at the pagoda during Thingyan. We make COVID-19 preventive measures at the pagoda for the health safety of the people. I wish all Myanmar people to be free from pandemic and have good health and wealth in the new year."

Pagodas and temples across Myanmar are crowded with pilgrims during Thingyan period. Myanmar Buddhists visit the pagodas during Thingayn to keep the Sabbath, perform meditation and meritorious deeds on the auspicious occasion of Myanmar New Year.
