Peruvian archaeologists unearthed the preserved mummy of a teenager dating back to pre-Inca times on Monday. The discovery, along with 24 other less-preserved skeletal remains, took place in a commercial complex about 20 kilometers east of the country's capital.

The head of the Cajamarquilla research project at the National University of San Marcos said that the mummy belonged to an adolescent male of approximately 12 years of age. It was found in an underground tomb covered by three layers of cotton textiles, along with utensils made out of pumpkin, beans and chili peppers.

The site dates back to over 1,000 years. The findings will help experts learn more about the cultural practices of mummification on the Peruvian coast.
