Aquatic Resources: Fishery sector supports the country’s GDP

The fishery sector is mainly supporting to the country’s business industry. During previous years, the fishery sector supported over 2% of the country’s GDP and moreover, it provided 50% of consumers and 6% of job opportunities for the people.

In some coastal regions, fishery sector contributes to 34% to 56% of the region and state incomes. The Department of Fisheries is implementing to produce more fishery products year by year and also providing technical supports to boost the country’s fishery sector, to be safe in producing aquatic products, to be sufficient in local and to export more.

In 2019-2020 fiscal year, the production of fishery products was 6,018 metric tons; over 4,800 metric tons is from fishing and over 1,100 metric tons from fish breeding.

During 2022-2021 fiscal year, over 110 million fingerlings with 2-inch size were released in the rivers, creeks and lakes to increase aquatic resources. The development of fishery sector can reduce poverty, create more job opportunities for the people and support local food sufficiency.
