More than 4,000 nurses at California hospitals have walked off the job in a dispute over pay, staffing and other issues. The unionized nurses began their strike at Stanford Hospital and Lucille Packard Children's Hospital in Palo Alto Monday morning.

"We are demanding greater support and resources from our employers out of the love for our patients and our profession," said Colleen Borges, president of the nurses' union. The union said they are also seeking improved mental health support for nurses.

Hospital officials told KGO television that they brought in replacement nurses to cover the shifts of striking nurses but some patients will have to postpone care.

The hospital in California's Silicon Valley issued a statement saying they hope a new contract agreement can be reached promptly.
