Two people have died and two others were critically injured after a family of five British nationals was struck by a landslide while walking on a track in Australia on Monday, police said. Police said a 49-year-old man and a nine-year-old boy died at the scene of the incident in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney. A 50-year-old woman and a 14-year-old boy were winched by a rescue helicopter and taken to hospital both in critical condition. Police said rescuers walked a 15-year-old girl out of the area and she was treated by paramedics for shock and taken to hospital.

Acting Superintendent, New South Wales state Police, John Nelson said "It's quite a tragic scene, we do have a girl that is walking out at the moment who is obviously extremely distressed and we're trying to talk to her in relation to obtain further information."

Police said the British consulate was assisting in the matter.
