Industrial Development: Local oil sufficiency & development of cotton industry

The Ministry of Industry held a coordination meeting for boosting production of oil crops, and development of cotton cultivation as well as textile and garment industry on Sunday.
Union Minister Dr Charlie Than discussed that the concerned ministries are taking measures for boosting production of oil crops by designating the cultivation zones.
As of March 2024, over 32,000 oil mills have been registered at the Industrial Supervision and Inspection Department. Among them, over 2,800 are in operation while the remaining 424 suspend temporarily due to various circumstances. These oil mill could able to grind over 100,000 tons of oil crops annually, with the majority of peanut oil.
He stressed the need to make cooperative efforts among the experts, oil crop growers and producers for boosting production with the utilizing of modern equipment and technologies.
For cotton industry, there are a total of 207 cotton mill operating in the country both by the ministry and private sector. He pledged to provide necessary assistance for operating full capacity of all the cotton mill.
The meeting discussed the plans for conducting mechanical training, test operation of modern oil mill, providing assistance for local oil sufficiency and development of textile and garment industry.
