India wants to host the 2036 Olympics, PM Modi says

India's Olympic ambitions took center stage at the 141st International Olympic Committee (IOC) session in Mumbai where Prime Minister Narendra Modi confirmed the country's bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games.

No city in India has hosted the Olympics before, but the country's athletes have given notable performance in the Games in recent years. Modi also revealed that his country is willing to host the Youth Olympics in 2029.

In another significant development, cricket, which has been absent from the Olympics for over a century, moved closer to a comeback. The International Olympic Committee's executive board accepted a proposal by LA organizers for Twenty20 cricket to be included as one of five new sports. The final choice of which sports are on the 2028 programme will be voted on upcoming IOC session in Mumbai.
