CARE International has reported that Sudan's education rebuilding efforts face severe, systemic hurdles as 8 million children remain completely out of school. Despite national efforts to reopen classrooms, the attendance rates vary drastically by region. In conflict-heavy areas like North Darfur, only 3% of schools are open, leaving over a million children unreached.

According to CARE International, only 202 out of nearly 20,000 schools have a drinking water network, and only 22 have functioning toilets. The fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the regional paramilitary has killed tens of thousands, displaced millions, and ruined the economy and education mechanism.
