Traffic came to a standstill in Ayazaga, one of the areas hardest hit by flooding in Istanbul, on the first working day of the week. Some roads were closed as part of post-flood measures, while the resumption of classes after a two-day break added to congestion in the area.
The extent of the damage in Ayazaga has also become clearer. The artificial turf pitch at a sports complex was completely covered in mud. Metal railings around the pitch were dismantled and moved aside, while goalposts and substitute benches were removed from the site.
Around 20 structures in a square lined with kiosks, flower shops and other businesses were demolished under controlled conditions following the floods. Work to clear the rubble from the demolished buildings, including shops and educational facilities, is nearing completion.
