The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded on Friday to Judge Navi Pillay for her lifelong efforts to promote peace, international law, and human rights. The 85-year-old South African was chosen at a time when the system of international law faces "tremendous pressure", the Nobel Committee said.
The committee highlighted her exceptional courage and integrity, noting that she has been instrumental in ensuring that war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide are prosecuted. Pillay currently led the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
