Women in eastern Türkiye are preserving the traditional craft of kilim weaving, turning sheep’s wool into colorful, handwoven rugs decorated with age-old motifs. Rooted in Anatolia’s nomadic heritage, the craft involves washing and drying wool, separating its fibres by carding, and spinning it into yarn.

The yarn is then coloured with plant-based dyes before being woven on looms. A public education centre provides three-month weaving courses and material support. Looms are also supplied to participants’ homes, allowing women to continue the craft while contributing to their family budgets. Their kilims feature traditional patterns and designs inspired by the region’s natural beauty.
