The northeastern Japanese prefecture of Iwate has held a traditional bullfighting event that dates back to the Edo period.
The Hiraniwa bullfighting competition in the city of Kuji is the only such event in the Tohoku region, and is held between spring and autumn every year. It originated centuries ago when people pitted their salt-carrying bulls against one another. During the event on Sunday, 13 bouts were fought featuring bulls ranging in age from two to 12. Driven by the loud shouts of their handlers, the bulls lunged forward and repeatedly locked horns.
