The Committee on Standardization of National Costumes of Ethnic Groups held its work coordination meeting at the Ministry of Culture, Hotels and Tourism on Friday.
Deputy Minister U Aye Tun attended the meeting and made a speech. The committee, established on August 10, 2023, has compiled a draft book, “Authentic National Costumes of Ethnic Groups”, covering 27 ethnic groups: six Kachin sub-tribes, nine Kayah sub-tribes, Kayin, Chin, Bamar, Mon, Rakhine and seven Shan sub-tribes, under the principle that “innovation should not surpass tradition.”
The draft will be reviewed and endorsed by relevant region and state governments and ethnic literature and cultural associations before submission to the Myanmar National Cultural Central Committee. The committee will also continue collecting outstanding costume information. Committee secretary, Rector of the National University of Arts and Culture (Yangon), presented the committee’s progress, followed by discussions and adoption of future work plans by Region and State Ethnic Affairs Ministers and members of ethnic literature and cultural associations.
