Myanmar is collecting information on its traditional rice cultivation practices and rice-related cultural traditions as part of efforts to nominate the country’s rice heritage for inclusion on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List.

The initiative aims to document traditional knowledge, farming practices, customs and cultural traditions associated with rice cultivation, harvesting and consumption that have been passed down through generations. Rice has long played an important role in Myanmar’s social, economic and cultural life.

Traditional practices surrounding rice farming, seasonal activities, festivals, food traditions and community-based knowledge form an important part of the country’s cultural heritage. The information being collected will be used to document the significance of Myanmar’s rice culture and support the preparation of a nomination for UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List.

The initiative is also expected to help preserve traditional knowledge and practices related to rice cultivation and promote awareness of Myanmar’s cultural heritage at the international level.
