Press Conference : Speaker of the Pyithu Hluttaw meets the media

Speaker of the Pyithu Hluttaw U Khin Yi met with local and foreign media representatives at the Hluttaw Building in Nay Pyi Taw on Saturday. He said the press meeting was held to strengthen communication between Hluttaw, the public, and the media.

Speaker U Khin Yi explained that Hluttaw is a body made up of representatives elected by voters from different constituencies. He said there are two main parliamentary systems worldwide, the bicameral - two chambers system and unicameral - one chamber system, with the choice depending on a country's size, population, and ethnic diversity.

Myanmar uses a bicameral system because it has more than 51 million people and 135 ethnic groups. He added that under the Constitution, the Pyithu Hluttaw constitutes with 440 members, 330 elected representatives and 110 military-appointed members.

However, due to vacant seats, it currently has 351 members. He said the Pyithu Hluttaw has four main responsibilities, forming the legislative branch and approving key state leaders, amending, repealing, and updating laws, overseeing and balancing the executive and judicial branches, and representing the people.

To carry out these duties, the Pyithu Hluttaw has 22 committees, including 4 Standing Committees and 18 Select Committees, which play an important role in supporting hluttaw work. The Speaker also said hluttaw serves as a bridge between the government and the public, and called on the media to help strengthen the connection between Hluttaw and the public and to support efforts to build a trusted and effective Hluttaw.
