LINE operator reports over 7 million records linked to users leaked

The operator of the popular messaging app LINE said approximately 7.1 million records linked to users of three games were leaked. LY Corporation says since May 2022 it was mistakenly sending data to a third-party ad tracking company. The leak came to light in April. The company said the data consisted of random strings of characters to identify game players and is unrelated to the LINE ID that allows users to add friends.

Officials stress the data did not include names, addresses or phone numbers. They add that the third-party company has disposed of the data and no unauthorized use has been reported. The company apologized for causing inconvenience and anxiety among its users and said it will take steps to prevent further leaks.
