In France’s Dijon city, the students of the Josephine Baker primary school have had a new attraction for the past few days that is a remarkably well-preserved skeleton at the bottom of a pit in an excavation area adjacent to their playground.
This skeleton is similar to the thirteen Gaulish skeletons already discovered last year at the same site. For over 30 years, archaeological excavations carried out in the city have revealed a special connection with the Gauls. Gauls are the Celtic people made famous by Asterix and Obelix but who remain poorly understood by archaeologists.
For archaeologists, Dijon is an essential city for trying to learn more about them. With two other tombs of the same type already discovered in 1992 during previous work, a small area in the city center alone contains about twenty seated Gaulish tombs, out of the 75 currently identified worldwide.
