Six workers trapped after mine explosion in Colombia

Six workers were trapped underground after an explosion Thursday at a coal mine in central Colombia.

"A methane gas explosion was reported at a coal mine, but they don't know the condition of the people who are trapped," commander of the volunteer fire department of Choconta said.  Authorities and rescue teams were trying to reach the mine, which was blocked by debris. Accidents such as cave-ins and explosions are not uncommon at mining sites in Colombia, and often deadly, especially at mines that operate illegally and don't take necessary safety precautions.
