US President Donald Trump has called for a new treaty following the expiration of the New START nuclear arms control pact with Russia on Thursday. Russian President Vladimir Putin last September proposed extending the treaty by another year. But no agreement was reached with the US, and the pact expired on Thursday.

Asked whether there is a temporary agreement with Russia to stand by the terms of the New START treaty, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said, "Not to her knowledge." If a new treaty is negotiated, its framework is expected to be a key issue, along with limits on nuclear arsenals.
