Spain began three days of national mourning on Tuesday following a deadly collision between two high-speed trains in the south of the country. An Iryo train derailed on Sunday evening and crashed into an Alvia train traveling on the opposite track, killing 41 people.

Emergency teams continue to work at the scene, cutting open wrecked wagons and checking for any remaining passengers. In a mark of respect, European Union flags were flown at half-mast in front of the European Commission and the European Council. Authorities described the accident as the deadliest train collision in Spain in over a decade.
