In order to protect Myitkyina Township, Kachin State, from the flooding of the Ayeyawady River, the Kachin State Government is implementing stone revetments and floodgate control projects along the river-contacting areas of the Township. On the morning of December 29, State Chief Minister U Hkhet Htain Nan held a coordination meeting regarding river dredging operations for waterway development in the Ma Li Kha Hall of the State Government Office.

Regarding these projects, the State Chief Minister noted that the severe flooding of the Ayeyarwady River in 1979, 2004, and 2024 is well-known to all, particularly the 2024 flood which inundated about 40 percent of the city and caused approximately 100 billion kyats in damage. Therefore, to protect against river flooding, flood protection walls, embankments, brick wall construction, and floodgate construction works are being carried out, and efforts must also be made to ensure smooth water flow. Hence, he urged everyone to participate in today's meeting, discuss the effective dredging operations, and strive to protect the city from flooding.

Following this, State Director of the Department of Water Resources and River Development, U Sein Lwin, explained the planned projects related to flood protection (dredging) operations for the Ayeyawady River and the benefits that could be gained from clearing these sandbanks. City elders and relevant departments discussed and presented their assessments on dredging operations under the Bala Min Htin Bridge and dredging operations at the Naung Ta Law နောင်တာလော Island Secondary Channel for smooth water flow. The State Minister for Transport supplemented and explained the measures to be taken regarding the project plans.

Afterward, in response to the discussions and presentations, the State Chief Minister coordinated and facilitated the necessary steps to form a committee for the sand dredging operations, ensure systematic and procedural implementation, and ensure the successful execution of the planned projects.
