Sri Lanka on 26th December marks the 21st commemoration of the Indian Ocean Tsunami, one of the deadliest natural disasters in the country’s history. More than 35,000 people lost their lives when the tsunami struck the island in December 26th 2004.

The main national commemoration was held in Peraliya, Galle, one of the areas worst affected by the 2004 tsunami. A two-minute silence was observed across the country from 9.25 a.m. to 9.27 a.m., in memory of the thousands who lost their lives.
