After winter’s first snowfall blanketed east China’s Shandong Province, a spectacular frost smoke appeared over a section of the Yellow River flowing through its Dongming County on Saturday.

With the fresh snow covering the riverbanks in white, a thick mist billowed and drifted above the broad river surface for about an hour, creating a dreamlike winter landscape. The phenomenon was caused by water vapor evaporating from the river surface and condensing rapidly in the cold air, most often observed in river sections with low temperatures and high humidity. The mist is most visible around sunrise and usually lasts about two hours.
