The National Defense and Security Council Information Team Leader Ma-J Gen Zaw Min Tun provided a response to media on November 26 regarding the media's questions about the US government's announcement to terminate the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Myanmar citizens.
The NDSC Information Team Leader, in his media response, said that regarding the media's questions about the US government's announcement to terminate the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Myanmar citizens, a response will be provided.
It’s learned from the announcements by the US Department of Homeland Security and US Citizenship and Immigration Services that the TPS previously granted to Myanmar nationals in the United States has been terminated. Upon studying this matter, it is found that the reason given for the termination of TPS is the improvement of the situation in Myanmar.
This includes the Myanmar government's revocation of the state of emergency, efforts to hold multi-party democracy general elections, the cessation of clashes with Ethnic Armed Organizations and progress in peace efforts, as well as the increasing stability and progress in Myanmar's administration.
Based on this assessment, it was concluded that Myanmar citizens who had received TPS can now safely return to Myanmar, leading to the termination. In this regard, the Myanmar government considers this announcement by the US government to be a positive one.
Myanmar citizens in the United States can return to their homeland; they are welcome. Since April 2, 2021, the State Administration Council has officially issued declarations inviting Myanmar citizens who are abroad for various reasons to return.
That declaration stated that those who have committed serious crimes such as murder and rape will face legal action according to the law, while others will be treated with special leniency and flexibility. Due to that declaration, many of those who had left and evaded have returned.
They are now living well within the country. Furthermore, on July 4, 2025, under the banner of invitations for the benefit of the Union, even armed groups such as so-called PDF were invited to return within the legal framework. As a result of this invitation, hundreds of members of armed groups including so-called PDF have already returned to the legal fold.
On September 26, 2025, an offer was also made to resolve political problems through political means, as elections will be held soon within the country. In the near future, a multi-party democracy general election will be held in the country. Myanmar citizens in the United States can return to Myanmar and vote in the general election. It’s hereby informed them that the government extend a welcoming hand, inviting them to participate in building a modern, developed, and progressive nation. Thank you all.
