A new digital donation system is being introduced in Lille to help residents support people living on the streets as cash use declines.

The project, Solly, provides homeless residents with rechargeable payment cards linked to QR codes. Passersby can scan the code and donate between £2 and £100 directly from their phones. Donations are restricted to basic necessities and are tax-deductible.

Local outreach groups distribute the cards to ensure secure use. The system aims to address reduced cash availability and donor concerns about how contributions are spent. Early users say the cards make it easier to pay for essentials such as food or temporary accommodation. Residents also note that the digital format suits younger donors who rely on mobile payments.
